Malena Michel
The Hanging GirlMalena Michel enters the story as a new disciple whose devotion to Atu Abanshamash Dumuzi places her within his intimate circle and makes her a source of mounting tension for Pirjo Abanshamash Dumuzi. Recruited in Paris, she is presented as someone captivated by Atu’s charisma; the evidence follows her chiefly through Pirjo’s resentful view of her and Pirjo’s intention to eliminate her.
Background and Recruitment
Malena’s parents were Italian, and she emigrated to France at the age of six. Atu picked her up in Paris a couple of months before the scene in which Pirjo thinks about her. When Malena stood before him, she described her past as coming together with his words and expressed a sense that her life’s purpose was to serve his desires. The account presents this declaration through Pirjo’s perspective, which is sharply hostile to Malena and regards her speech as saccharine.
By the time Pirjo is thinking about her, Malena is with Atu’s group and never more than a few metres away from him. She is caught in the net of his charisma, a description that frames her devotion both as an attachment to Atu and as a position within his influence. Malena’s own further thoughts or actions are not shown in these passages.
Place in Atu’s Circle
Malena is not the first woman to occupy this role among Atu’s disciples. Pirjo recognizes a recurring pattern: women drawn to Atu have increasingly joined the group over the years, and Malena is one of those whose closeness to him Pirjo has come to resent. The arrangement is unequal as Pirjo sees it: Malena’s devotion brings her near Atu, while Pirjo considers the attention Malena receives undeserved.
A woman recruited during a London trip provides an immediate contrast. After the woman fainted, Atu unusually insisted that Pirjo have her taken to his private quarters to rest. Pirjo does not know what happened behind the closed door, but she noticed a new look in Atu’s eyes afterward. A letter from that same woman, seeking a place on Atu’s next nature absorption course on Öland, makes her possible return imminent. Pirjo takes some comfort in the prospect that this newcomer might draw Atu’s attention away from Malena, but she also fears that the situation could go badly. The two women are distinct figures in the account: the London recruit is not Malena.
Pirjo’s Hostility and Malena’s Uncertain Fate
Malena becomes a prospective target in Pirjo’s private calculations. While preparing to deal with Wanda Phinn, Pirjo thinks that once Wanda has been neutralized and eliminated, it will be Malena’s turn. She has not yet worked out how to settle the score without Atu finding out, and fears that delay could let the matter become ugly. The evidence therefore establishes Pirjo’s intention, not an attack on Malena or its outcome.
Malena’s narrative significance lies in the pressure her presence creates inside Atu’s circle. She is at once a devoted newcomer, a member of a recurring pattern of women drawn to Atu, and the object of Pirjo’s jealousy and planned retaliation. The threat surrounding her is conveyed through Pirjo’s perspective; the passages do not establish whether Malena knows of it or how her story ultimately ends.
